CHAPTER VI. ELECTIONSCHAPTER VI. ELECTIONS\Article 1. Governing Body

The election of city officials shall be conducted in all respects as provided by the laws of Kansas governing the holding of city elections.

At all city elections the polls shall be open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m., unless different hours are set and publicly announced by the county election officer.

(a)   The City of Galva, Kansas shall be governed by five council members and a mayor as provided herein, and in the appropriate statues of the State of Kansas not otherwise specifically referred to herein.  The mayor and council member elected previously, are hereby confirmed in office for four year terms expiring as follows.

(b)   A regular city election shall be held on the first Tuesday in November, 2017.  At such election, 3 council members shall be elected to fill terms of such officers expiring during the election year.  The council members shall be elected for a term of four years each and until their successor is elected and qualified.  Regular elections shall be held thereafter on the first Tuesday of November in each odd-numbered year to fill expiring terms.

(c)   A regular city election shall be held on the first Tuesday in November, 2019.  At such election, a mayor and two council members shall be elected to fill terms of such officers expiring during the election year.  The candidates shall be elected for terms of four years each and until their successor is elected and qualified.  Regular elections shall be held thereafter on the first Tuesday of November in odd-numbers year to fill expiring terms.

(d)   Whenever a tie should occur in the vote for any of the officers to be elected, the results shall be decided by lot of the board of election canvassers

The term of officers elected shall commence on the second Monday in January following certification of the election, and the selected officers shall qualify by taking the oath or affirmation of office to be filed with the city clerk.

In accordance with K.S.A. 25-205, and amendments thereto, any person may become a candidate for city office elected at large by having had filed with the county election office either of the following:

(a)   a declaration of candidacy, accompanied by any fee required by law; or

(b)   a nomination petition. The nomination petition must be signed by twenty-five (25) qualified electors of the city.
